Job Type/Schedule This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week. Department Name/Job Location This position is in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. This position is for the Medical School Campus. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: Position involves reviewing and filling prescriptions and dispensing medications to patients; supervising pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns during preparation/distribution of injectable and oral medications and checking technicians work before dispensing; maintenance of patient profiles and appropriate entry of medication orders and prescriptions in the pharmacy computer; responsible for daily operations of the pharmacy in the absence of the pharmacist in charge. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Receives medication orders from authorized prescribers; interprets medication order, and enters order in pharmacy computer. Orders are reviewed for accuracy, appropriateness and dosages are verified; orders are reviewed for drug allergies and/or drug interactions; maintains accurate patient profiles. 2. Reviews all pertinent laboratory data prior to dispensing to assure safety and determine if dose(s) should be modified or withheld. Physicians(s) notified if problems exist. 3. Verifies appropriate compounding by technicians/interns of all medication orders including injectables, cytotoxic medications, home infusion, and oral medications. Medication orders are checked for appropriate calculations for right drug/dose/patient before dispensing. 4. Prepares, checks and dispenses outpatient prescriptions and maintains accurate records for original prescriptions and refills, assures accurate filing is performed by technician, generates daily prescription log sheet and signs log sheet. 5. Assures compliance with state and federal regulations, securing/renewing licenses and registrations as required; obtains required hours of continuing education as outlined by State Board of Pharmacy. 6. Assures compliance with drug formulary to meet patient needs and minimize waste. 7. Supervises technicians/interns to assure adequate inventory of medications is maintained. 8. Provides physicians/staff/patients with appropriate information concerning therapeutic actions, interactions adverse effects, and formulary status of medications. Offers patient counseling when dispensing outpatient medications. 9. Participates in Quality Assurance (QA) programs within the pharmacy and assures technicians are completing assigned QA tasks by co-signing documents (if applicable). 10. Assists with entering and dispensing investigational medications; assures appropriate supplies of investigational drugs are used and completes all required log sheets and documentation in an accurate manner. Provides appropriate notification if investigational drug supplies need to be reordered. 11. Checks and dispenses controlled substances in compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations. 12. Participates in continuing education programs and pharmacy related programs as required for license renewals and completes required training programs for job. Required Qualifications * Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharm D degree. * Current registration in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois applicably by state of work location as a Pharmacist. * New graduates may fill this role subject to limitations mandated by the Missouri and/or Illinois State Board of Pharmacy pending results of their initial licensing examination. * Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements). Preferred Qualifications * Experience in specialty pharmacy, hazardous drug handling, investigational drug handling procedures, and retail pharmacy. * Pharmacy residency. * Working knowledge of current state and federal regulations affecting pharmacy practice. * Demonstrated ability to implement standards of accuracy and judgment. Salary Range The hiring range for this position is $92,082 - $128,918 annually.
