Job Summary

Maintains accountability for ensuring the safety and efficacy of medication use. Educates and acts as a consultant to patients/family and members of the health care team related to optimal drug therapy and participates in process improvement activities and drug use evaluations. Works with multiple medication automation systems.Essential Functions

  • Interprets and screens medication orders for appropriate agent, dose, route, allergies, and potential drug interactions. Safely compounds and dispenses medications for administration to patients.

  • Evaluates patients, orders appropriate laboratory tests, and interprets serum drug levels utilizing pharmacokinetic principles; provides prescribers with dosage regimen recommendations to optimize therapeutic outcomes, reduce patient risk, and monitor the costs associated with drug therapy.

  • Provides appropriate supervision and direction within appropriate skill level to technicians, residents, interns, and other support personnel.

  • Engages in continuous study of the entire professional field to maintain the professional competence, knowledge, and skills necessary for satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities. Completes required continuous training and education, including department and Spectrum Health specific requirements on a timely basis.

  • Provides education and counseling to patients/family/significant others/members of the health care team in order to optimize outcomes and appropriate use of medications.

  • Ensures that services are provided in accordance with State and Federal regulations, organizational policy, and accreditation/compliance requirements.

Job Summary:

Investigational Drug Service (IDS) Pharmacists assist in the development, maintenance, and conduction of clinical trials at Spectrum Health. IDS Pharmacists serve as an essential part of the growing Spectrum Health research team to ensure medication-related research is executed in a safe and efficient manner. Compliance with FDA, CFR, GCP, study sponsors, Michigan State Board of Pharmacy regulations, Joint Commission, and Spectrum Health Policy/procedures is at the core of the work completed by IDS. Responsibilities:

  • Oversee conduction of investigational drug studies; implement and manage studies in accordance with GCP, FDA Regulations and Guidance's, Joint Commission standards, applicable state and federal laws, Spectrum Health Policies and Procedures, and current pharmacy practice

  • Serve as a liaison with principal investigators and study teams to establish delegated IDS/pharmacy role

  • Provide staff training and education related to study drug management and dispensing throughout the system

  • Create supporting documents and EPIC builds specific for the individual nature of each clinical trial as necessary

  • Work with sponsors and clinical research organizations to combine Spectrum Health processes with clinical trial expectations.

  • Assure the appropriateness of medication therapy through:

  • Review of medication orders for clinical appropriateness based on patient specific conditions and concomitant therapies.

  • Compound and accurately dispense medications, intravenous solutions and related supplies

  • Formulate, prepare, and maintain quality control of pharmaceutical preparations

  • Check medication preparation and oversee delegated pharmacy services performed by pharmacy technicians and interns

  • Communication with providers regarding appropriateness of drug therapy and patient response to therapy

  • Provide on-call support for IDS Pharmacy as assigned

  • Act as functional supervisor and appropriately delegate work to IDS Pharmacy technicians and interns

  • Provide assistance as a member of patient care team ensuring accurate medication use and documentation of medication administration

  • Assist in the development and implementation of new pharmacy services to support Spectrum Health’s goals and objectives

  • Develop and implement quality improvement and process improvements to improve patient care and pharmacy services

Qualifications

  • Required Bachelor's Degree Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy

  • 2 years of relevant experience hospital pharmacy Preferred

  • American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency in Pharmacy Practice Preferred

  • LIC-Clinical Pharmacist - STATE_MI State of Michigan 90 Days required

  • LIC-Pharmacist Controlled Substance - STATE_MI State of Michigan 90 Days required

  • CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association 180 Days required Or

  • CRT-Pediatric Adv Life Support (PALS) - AHA American Heart Association 180 Days required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant training and/or work experience in Research Pharmacy/IDS

  • Relevant training and/or work experience in clinical research

  • Chemotherapy or Infusion clinic experience

  • Strong operational knowledge

Work Schedule includes:

  • Approximately 75% of time will be spent directly with IDS pharmacy

  • Approximately 25% of time will be spent at Butterworth on day, swing, evening shifts, including, every third weekend

  • Additional on-call responsibilities
