*JOB SUMMARY*

Under the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, the pharmacist is responsible for the filling of patient prescriptions and the education and counseling of physicians, staff and patients regarding medication(s). In addition, the staff pharmacist is responsible for training and supervision of staff pharmacy technicians, ensuring policies and protocols are followed. The staff pharmacist will also precept students as needed.

*JOB REQUIREMENTS*

*Minimum Education *Graduated from a school of Pharmacy, Pharm. D. preferred

*Minimum Work Experience *Minimum of two years hospital pharmacy experience preferred. Supervisory experience, strong leadership skills, proven problem-solving skills, excellent communications skills and the ability to multi-task a must. Excellent computer skills. Ability to work a flexible schedule (including some evenings and weekends).

*Required Licenses *[Virginia, United States] Pharmacist
Currently licensed as a Registered Pharmacist by the VA State Board of Pharmacy

*Required Skills *Excellent oral and written communication skills

Verbal and written ability to give information and present ideas essential in administrative management. Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department. Leadership ability, integrity, and initiative required. Ability to motivate personnel. Ability to problem-solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner. Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments.

*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*

Responsible for collaborating with other departments regarding resources and services for improved patient care. Prepares medications by reviewing, verifying, and entering physician orders and detecting therapeutic incompatibilities. Use clinical skills for optimizing medication treatment for inpatients. Participates in ICU rounding, anticoagulation monitoring/management, and kinetics dosing. Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals. Interacts regularly with providers and other health-care staff. Actively participates in optimal antimicrobial selection through 48-hour Antimicrobial time-out. Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies and advising interventions and drug allergies. Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' work flow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; verifying order entries, charges, and inspections. Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of health care professionals; counseling patients on drug therapies. Develops hospital staff's pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs; training pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, residents, and health care professionals. Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by monitoring nursing unit inspections; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; supervising the work results of support personnel; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; advising management on needed actions. Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Participates and evaluates aseptic technique for sterile preparations. Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. *FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS*

Work requires physical ability as walking, standing, sitting, etc. Involves mental activity and problem-solving. Talking and listening are essential in instructing and supervising personnel. May be exposed to injury by irrational or disturbed patients, patients with communicable diseases, and/or potentially dangerous equipment. Risk of exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials. Walking and standing for long periods of time depending on workload. Walking intermittently through halls of hospital and outside. Sitting for long periods of time throughout day. Transport (lift, carry, store) materials weighing up to 75 pounds to and from the pharmacy to nursing units and storage areas. Bending required frequently, 45-90 degree angles, to check patients and operate machinery. Reading and writing required regularly to follow job description.
