The ED Pharmacist Specialist is a pharmacy leader responsible for coordinating, implementing, and monitoring pharmacy services in the Emergency Department. This leader serves as a clinical resource to staff and serves as the pharmacy representative for multi-disciplinary process improvement. The ED Pharmacist Specialist is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, quality management/monitoring, regulatory requirements and review of Pharmacy Services provided in the Emergency Department. The ED Pharmacist Specialist is responsible for supervising, training, scheduling, continual oversight, and quality management of the Certified Pharmacy Technician Medication History Specialists.
Provide clinical pharmacist duties for the ED population such as Antimicrobial Stewardship, Anticoagulation Services, Code Team Participation, Drug Information Services, Admission Medication Histories and Medication Reconciliation
Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of medication history technicians: Create schedule, manage time off requests, and post schedule in When to Work scheduling software; Perform medication history technician quarterly audits; handle personnel issues, work closely with Memorial’s Pharmacy Technician Coordinator; Assist with performing annual evaluations.
Serve as the communication liaison to pharmacy ED staff members
Attend and represent pharmacy at ED physician meetings, ED leadership committee meetings, and at quality/ Process/LEAN projects
Assist in development of technologies used in the medication-use process in the ED: Assist residents or pharmacists with research projects, Review medication-error reports and investigate ED errors. Conduct failure mode and effects analysis and root-cause analysis on error-prone aspects of the medication-use process in the ED
Precept pharmacy students and residents for the Emergency Medicine Learning Experience and meets ASHP preceptor requirements
Conduct educational forums for health care professionals and students
Perform all duties of a pharmacist
Other duties as assigned by management
Sys/Div/Mkt/Local Manager – Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 3 years leadership experience OR minimum of 5 years leadership experience in the discipline OR Master’s Degree and no experience
Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) approved College of Pharmacy with a BS, MS, or Pharm D degree.Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Residency and 3 years of hospital experience as a clinical pharmacist.
Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY-2 Specialty Residency in Emergency Medicine or Critical Care OR equivalent experience.
1 year experience as a PGY-1 preceptor, fulfilling ASHP preceptor requirements
TN Board of Pharmacy License. Licensure must be received within 90 days from the first day of employment
Active ACLS, BLS
Board Certification by Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BCPS) in Critical Care or Pharmacotherapy
Knowledge of the principles, practices, standards and techniques relating to the compounding and dispensing of medicinal drugs.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements applicable to the pharmacy profession.
Ability to use automated systems and office equipment at an acceptable level of proficiency.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of pharmaceutical care, including IV fluids, IV additive programs, automated dispensing systems, and IV therapy services.
Ability to convey information effectively in verbal and written communication.
Computer applications such as Microsoft Office
